Sustainability
Sustainability is a complex and multifaceted issue that extends further than environment and climate. Today’s society is faced with challenges in all three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. According to the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainability focuses on “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”
Penn State Brandywine is committed to the goal of promoting and supporting sustainability. Brandywine is working to fulfill the University mission of incorporating sustainability into the campus landscape, classrooms, and architecture, as well as performing faculty and student research related to this area. To this date, the campus has organized environmental workshops, celebrated Earth Day each year, invited speakers to campus, implemented an Environmental Inquiry minor option, integrated sustainability into the LEED-certified residence hall and student union buildings, obtained a “pollinator-friendly” certification for the campus, collaborated with other institutions, shared student work on sustainability at the annual undergraduate research conference, designed an award-winning organic garden, among other activities. At Brandywine, there are a number of opportunities to learn, research, collaborate, and take action towards the issue of sustainability.
Campus Garden
Opened in 2014, the Penn State Brandywine Campus Garden is a 50-feet-by-50-feet fenced-in area with approximately 21 raised beds.
The garden’s mission is to:
- Expose students to gardening practices;
- Address issues of food security;
- Enable curriculum connections;
- Create community connections; and,
- Develop campus food system connections.
The garden’s proudest accomplishments to date include making donations to a local food bank, winning 1st place in a community garden competition, and participating in Delaware County WWI remembrances.

Every two weeks, this group listened to a selection of podcasts around a nature/sustainability theme and came together online for a virtual discussion with some guided questions.
This program, titled Listen To This!, allowed individuals that were required to remain physically distanced come together and form a new community.
